Description
About artist: Van Tran was born in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 2000 and has since completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in Art from Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art Design + Technology. Currently, he is pursuing a Master of Arts degree in Art Research Collaboration from the same institution. Van is a skilled multimedia artist deeply intrigued by human interconnectivity, which constructs the core of his work. He utilises a range of mediums, such as watercolours, oil paintings, and lacquer paintings, to create a distinctive visual interpretation that showcases his understanding of various mediums and their strengths. His mixed cultural background is reflected in his art, where he metaphorically expresses his inner experience of adapting to a new culture and his desire to connect and harmonise with people. By intertwining vibrant colours, he portrays the diverse yet interconnected society we reside in. Van sees individuals hold a unique essence that he captures through harmonious colours. He desires to represent the subtle shades of people's personalities as a way of preserving and honouring the special moments of co-existence that cannot be repeated.
About artwork: The concept of a painting existing before its creation is the core of my belief in art practice. It is born in the artist's mind, in the pigments, in the tubes of paint, and in the legacy of previous generations of artists who have worked with these materials. My appreciation for the medium of lacquer stems from my parents' three decades of experience with it, which has helped me understand its cultural and historical significance. This, in turn, has inspired fresh perspectives and propelled the development of my artistic practice. Growing up between Vietnam and Ireland, I have been unable to observe the gradual transformations over time. I only see things after they have happened, leaving me to ponder what has transpired in the interim. While this can be disheartening, it is also fascinating to witness the decay, destruction, and metamorphosis of things, as it denotes a precise moment of transition and the dawn of a new cycle in the ever-changing nature of life.
