Description
About artist: Salah Eddine Mechegueg, born in 1987, is a Dublin-based artist and a member of Dance Ireland. He started dancing in 2003 and his style is popping and contemporary dance. He has worked with many national and international companies such as Algerien Ballet, Kamal Ouali Company, and Baraka Company. He has worked with choreographer, Abou Lagraa, in 2010 on the piece 'Nya' with the Contemporary Ballet of Algiers. In 2011, he participated in the dance documentary, 'O My Body!', directed by Laurent Ait Benalla. The documentary won Best Documentary Prize 2013 at the Festival of African, Asian, & Latin American Cinema in Milan, Italy. In 2018, he developed a keen interest in photography as a way to express his feelings and experiences in life. For him, a photo is a tool that helps him deal with many social issues. His first photo exhibition was in Artthouse in 2023.

About artwork: "Alwan is a metaphor in Arabic that means "rainbow" and also refers to "colours." Unfortunately, it is also a word some people in my country use to express their hatred towards the LGBTQ+ community and even anything that differs from the norms and traditions of Arab society. It's a word still used by some to mock and express their disdain for people who simply want to live better lives.
Through this project, I wanted to convey the struggles faced by those in the LGBTQ+ community, and by those who choose to be different, those who still live under societal pressure.

In the image, we see two hands holding each other, each different in skin tone and shape. I aimed to reflect a personal experience, representing anxiety, fear, insecurity, as well as people who continue to live under threat and instability.
On the other hand, the image also symbolizes the bond and love between two individuals who just want to live in their own world. The rainbow across their hands represents freedom, life, and shared ideals. The water on their hands, to me, symbolizes tears, sadness, or wounds.
The Alwan Project is still a work in progress.
