About artist: Jim Ricks is an American–born Irish conceptual artist, writer, and curator. He has exhibited throughout Ireland and internationally, including a number of public art projects. He lives and works in County Galway. Ricks’s work is interdisciplinary, with purposefully reduced boundaries be- tween curation, community organising, publication, display, and an individual practice. He problematises preconceptions about nationalist identity and capitalist values with research-driven, publicly engaged site-specific collaborations. He strives for gesamtkunstwerk, believes creolisation is beautiful, and seeks out examples of the ‘everyday’ to enshrine. Solo shows include: Museo Casa de León Trotsky (Mexico City), Daniela Elbahara (Mexico City), Casa Maauad (Mexico City), Pallas Projects (Dublin), the Hugh Lane Gallery (Dublin), Onomatopee (Eindhoven), 126 (Galway). Ricks has shown in a number of group shows as well: Solstice Arts Centre (Navan, Co. Meath), Centre Culturel Irlandais (Paris), Imperial War Museum (London), Jack Shainman Gallery (NYC), Ulster Museum (Belfast), Royal Hibernian Academy (Dublin). About artwork: Fully Automated Luxury Gay Space Communism' is a 2020 oil on canvas work produced by artist Jim Ricks. It is an painting of a well circulated internet meme. The meme used an online 'retro wave' generator to make the graphic 80's style and took the phrase from online political currents. It envisions an idealistic society where gender norms have been abolished to such an extent that there is little to no difference between gay and straight, and due to automation, luxury is available to all people.
