About artist: Paul McGrane (b.1991, Dublin) is an artist & curator working in Dublin, Ireland. He graduated from Technological University Dublin in 2015 with a BA in Fine Art. He worked as co-curator for The Complex Gallery from 2016 - 2019. Paul’s practice focuses predominantly on painting, sculpture, and installation. He makes paintings through the use of abstraction utilising colour, shape, light, and motif. He engages in a process of layering thin washes of pigment repeatedly over each other. Paint is then brushed in long vertical or horizontal strokes. This can often lead to areas of the surface becoming overworked, and broken down, due to the use of turpentine, leading to interesting discrepancies.  Paul thinks of these discrepancies as timestamps that etch into the canvas through vigorous mark making. This process aims to push the boundaries of traditional painting techniques. Paul’s broader interests lie within contemporary design and public spaces of worship, sensory rooms, waiting rooms etc. which he references in his work through site responsive installation and sculpture. Recent awards include Hang Tough Solo Exhibition Award, Dublin, and Rua Red Winter Open Award (2019), Dublin. Recent exhibitions include Páipéar (2022) at Hang Tough Gallery, Dublin, (2021) at Rua Red, Dublin, and Winter Open Exhibition (2019) at Rua Red, Dublin. His work is included in the Office Of Public Works, State Arts Collection, The Law Society of Ireland and multiple private collections.
