About artwork: `Thaw' - Oil and Cold Wax on Bangor Blue roof slate. 'Thaw' was inspired by a trip to Norway during the end of the winter snows, as the temperature started to rise. The speed of change in the colour and light surrounding us as the snow melted reminded me of the sudden nature of life and how it can change in an instant. It's about change and that moment of realisation that what was is gone and a new life lies ahead. I recently started exploring the textural nature of roof slate as an alternative surface to canvas, particularly Bangor Blue, which has a magnificent textural form. My interest stems from using reclaimed materials in my art and reducing waste by reusing what is generally cast aside and giving it a renewed life in a different form. I use oil paint with cold wax in order to enhance the textural quality of the slate and also to create depth to my paintings. Aside from painting, I have a great interest in sculpture and ceramics. I feel it is important as an artist to use and explore different media to express how I see the world.
