Description
About artist: Catherine Ryan makes detailed multilayered paintings using objects collected from daily life. These found and donated items tell a story when meshed together through the primal medium of paint.
Her work is currently focused on her immediate environment and experience. Cherry Blossom Flotsam is a tribute to the cherry blossom tree, a symbol of the beauty and impermanence of life. Saccharine colours and images such as the 18th century Versailles powder-faced woman merge with the language of advertising “for sensitive tee” to heighten the feeling of these particular blooms. She also uses snippets of Gaeilge / the Irish language as a reminder of the beauty of this language, the history of which ebbs and flows.
Catherine’s technique evolved from influences including a background in glass design, a love of painting, sculpture, street art and the readymade. Recent studies in Folklore also deepened her understanding of the symbolism within everyday objects.
Catherine is a professional member of Visual Artists Ireland and artists’ network Artnet DLR. She has exhibited widely in Ireland including the RHA and RUA RED and in group shows in the UK, France and the USA. Her work is held in collections at home and abroad.
