About the work: 'Lucid #2' is from a series of works inspired by the vibrant colours and music popular in the 1970s and 80s. Screen technology transitioned from black and white to colour in the 1970s. From glowing dance floors to neon lights illuminating the disco and punk scenes, eclectic, vibrant colours marked this era. In the 80s, ground breaking technology intersected with ways to have fun; computer and video games flourished, fantastical TV advertisements appeared and MTV made its debut.
Through the specific use of layers of paint and/or fabric, the artist attempts to touch on ideas of transparency, concealment and 'being unveiled'.

Artist Bio:
Ellie Cullen is an Irish artist living and working between Dublin and her studio in North Tipperary, Ireland. In 2016, she graduated from Limerick School of Art and Design having completed her Bachelors degree in Fine Art (Painting). In 2019, she graduated from the National College of Art and Design after completing her Masters degree in Design History and Material Culture.
Through the exploration of varying artistic disciplines, Cullen continuously blurs the boundaries between Fine Art and Design. She is concerned with the haptic and tactile qualities of materials and the relationship between objects and space. Her work which is provisional, opulent and sometimes dramatically decorative, is a fusion of personal fantasy, mythology and social commentary. Often, through the use of somewhat ‘garish’ ready-made materials, she reflects on the concern with the politics and psychology of identity and authorship.
