Sean O’Rourke is a visual artist, who specialises in painting and sculpture. Sean received his BA in Fine Art Painting from NCAD in 2016. In the same year, he was awarded the NUI Art & Design Prize for his degree show work titled 'Crucifixion'. The piece was a triptych commemorating the demolition and gentrification of Dolphin House flat complex. Since graduating, much of his work has focused on socio-economic issues within the context of Dublin city. Sean uses found objects to make art, working with rusted metal once used to board up the windows of derelict flat blocks. Using them not only for their raw aesthetics but as a symbol of social osmosis. Sean recognises that we are all influenced by our external surroundings, which makes us into the individual we are today. Conceptually Sean looks at the role of masculinity within a socio-economic context, noticing how many young males from working-class backgrounds pose as rough exteriors, in order to shield themselves from society’s criticism, hiding their own insecurities and anxieties as not to appear weak. The metal plates symbolise the rough exterior that male adolescents carry around with them, as a way of hiding feelings and protecting their masculinity. The males use this exterior to be perceived differently by their peers. Using the concept of architecture as a way of looking at the external and internal. Externally a persona is projected outward to compensate for feelings going on internally. Most recently Sean’s work looks at the current housing crisis in Ireland. At present Sean is doing his postgraduate studies at UCD in psychology, in the hopes to inform many of his conceptual concerns. Sean has exhibited work both nationally and internationally, RHA (IE), The Hugh Lane (IE), Ulster Museum (NIR), Orlinda Gallery (FR), LuxExpo (LU), Beaulieu Lausanne (CH). In 2018 Sean had his first major solo exhibition at The Lab Gallery titled ‘Cultural Osmosis’, which looked at how our external environment can form our personality. His artwork has been purchased by the National University of Ireland, Maynooth University, Kennedy Wilson Estate Agent, as well as private collectors.
