Description
Description:: Ruth Egan is an Irish artist based in Dublin who studied visual arts at St Lucas Academy in Brussels, Belgium. Her work is in painting and printmaking. She has had solo exhibitions of paintings and prints in both Belgium and Ireland: at St John’s Theatre & Arts Centre (Listowel), The Helix, Mullingar Arts Centre and Gallery Contact J (Antwerp) among others. She has also participated in arts festivals around Ireland such as Cruthú Arts Festival, Galway Fringe Festival, Féile na Bealtaine and Ranelagh Contemporary Arts Festival. Her works have featured on the covers of Studies in Arts and Humanities journal and Hidden Channel Zine, as well as in The Ogham Stone. This work is part of a series of paintings made on recycled copper, or aluminium, print plates many of which were already marked from previous use in the printmaking process. In creating these unique pieces, the metal and its markings were allowed to influence development, direction and outcome of the finished work, hence fashioning image content as much as did artistic intent. Moreover, the play of light on metallic surface continues to work on the resultant images lending a somewhat ephemeral quality to each image, altering it according to the position of the viewer. It also takes the concept of recycled art a step further since tools formerly used to make art, the print plates, are turned into artworks themselves: the means converted into the end.
