About artist: Sophia Vigne Welsh is a visual artist from Co. Wicklow, Ireland, currently based in Lisbon. She graduated from NCAD in 2016 with a first class honors in Fine Art Media and is currently enrolled in the Turps Bananas Correspondence Course. Through a modernist lens Sophia uses painting, drawing and collage to create a multilayered abstract language with which she playfully deconstructs relationships between the body and space.
About artwork: As with a lot of my recent work I’m using the motif of a portal to explore an emotional landscape. I’ve been deeply angry and upset to see the far right rhetoric of America and the UK seep into Ireland and the tangible effect this has on those in the LGBTQI+ community. Rather than feed into the hatred and fear that these bigots want us to feel I choose to fight back with vibrancy and joy.
