Description
About artist: Julie Ann Haines is a Dublin based printmaker whose work depicts moments of stillness in the overlooked corners of urban spaces close to where she lives. Her subject matter is the unremarkable and unpeopled localities passed by everyday when all that is left are the traces of those who have passed through. She layers colours in either multi plate copper etchings or monotypes to produce her final image. Her work submitted here was taken from photographs captured in an early morning before lockdown. She is motivated by light and curious about the structures we collect and build and the traces we leave behind. Haines graduated with a BA Honours in Fine Art Painting from Norwich School of Art in 1989 and has been a member of the Graphic Studio Dublin since 2013. Recent exhibitions include The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, International Open Print Exhibition, Bankside Gallery, RHA Dublin and the RUA Belfast. Her work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Ireland, Arts Council of N. Ireland, Dept of Finnance, N.Ireland, Office of Public Works, National Library of Ireland and University of Limerick.
About artwork: This work is a 4 plate colour etching depicting an Art Deco wind shelter on the coastal promenade in Clontarf. It is one of many such shelters built in that area in the 1930's and 40's and is attributed to the Dublin City Council Housing architect at that time Herbert Simms, whose excellent and sensitive designs can be witnessed across the city. It depicts the structure in a state of disrepair bathed in light, in a moment of calm when early morning traffic alongside had come to a standstill. Its flaking paintwork and crumbling edges hint at the many human histories that have passed through it and its empty unpeopled status seemed to accentuate the silence that enveloped it. The presence of the illuminating lights from the docklands and still long shadows seemed to deepen the beauty of its neo classical design. There remained a strength in its presence despite the impermanence around its precarious state and unsure future.
