Description
About artist: Kathrine Geoghegan is an artist living and working in Straffan, County
Kildare.
Kathrine’s practice is concerned with conservation, habitat and the preservation of wild places. She wishes to raise awareness and increase knowledge of the importance of different habitats through her paintings of botanical forms. Not a botanical artist in the strict scientific sense, rather she describes native plants in their natural habitat, those plants that some might call weeds, so important for biodiversity.
What you see in her paintings is an insect’s-eye view of the world.
Kathrine has had 8 solo exhibitions. Her work has been acquired by the OPW for the State Collections, and her paintings feature in corporate and private collections.
About artwork: I have a meadow behind my studio in Kildare, about half an acre in size. Native Irish plants emerge from March onward, starting with the yolk-yellow dandelion, so important for bees as they emerge after the winter. This painting describes the end of the season, August when Wild Carrot dominates the space alongside teasel, both so important for pollinators. Birds have carried in some wheat kernels which have taken hold alongside the natives. When I walk in the meadow at night, the perfume of the blooms mingles with the earthy wet soils, a heady mixture which inspired this painting.
