Description
About artist: My practice is focused primarily on place and landscape. I am interesting in memory, deep mapping, and the communal history of place, in particular the elements that are hidden, suggested or half remembered. What I make are not accurate topographical depictions, but more what is sensed, it is about the landscape, and is a response to both what is there and the hidden history within it. We have powerful associations, and embodied memories, in the places we know. I try to capture this relationship. My fine art print is regularly exhibited throughout Ireland and abroad. It is held in the Archives of the Botanic Gardens Dublin Cill Rialaig Kerry and the Graphic Studio Dublin, as well as in private collections in Ireland, the UK, Austria and New Zealand. I have received arts awards from the Irish Arts Council, and DLR Co. Co., I am a member of the Graphic Studio Dublin. I have completed an MFA in 2018 and artist residencies Limerick Printmakers (2020) in Cill Rialaig (2015, 2020, 2021), Berlin 2008 & New York 1999.
About artwork: Inspired by the views across farmland in Wicklow as I drive along country roads. The high hedges frame the view. I see a deep blue sky, and a glimpse of filed and ploughed soil. Sunlight glows on the horizon. This is just such a typical sight in the Irish countryside. The medium used is carborundum, which is a notoriously querulous medium to use, but oh the results!! The image on the plate is made using a thick textured paste which is painted on with a brush. Why use this method? because it gives the most extraordinary depth of colour and creates a slightly relief effect on the surface adding dynamism to the light refracting off the pigment. The low textured bits print dark, and visa-versa, so I am painting back to front. It is also quite hard to get details. However, the brush marks are retained, and it can also be worked into with drypoint when it hardens. To print it I add special printing ink into the lines and texture of the image on the plate; I wipe the excess away carefully so the surface is almost clean. Then I am ready to make my print. I dampen the paper then and place it over the plate and roll it through the printing press under great pressure. This causes the ink to be pulled out of the incised lines and textured surfaces onto the paper and creates the image. But the etching is not finished yet. The final step is to press and dry the print very flat under pressure and heat.
