About artist: Sophia Vigne Welsh is a contemporary painter from Wicklow currently based in London where she is pursuing an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art. Previously she studied Fine Art Media at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin where she was awarded a first class honours in 2016. More recently she completed the Turps Bananas Painting Correspondence Course whilst living in Lisbon. She has exhibited internationally with group shows in Ireland, Spain, Portugal and the United States. Sophia’s work can be seen in The Dean Hotel Galway, Hangtough Contemporary, Dublin and Outset Gallery, Galway. She has been commissioned by Diageo, Hensteeth Studios, Hatch Blackrock and many private clients to create both indoor and outdoor wall paintings. In July of this year Sophia opened her first two person show 'Vibrant Matter' with Pia Mresk in Galeria Augustine, Lisbon to an overwhelmingly positive reception.
About artwork: “Paradise Landing” employs expressive mark making and vibrant bursts of colour to explores themes of grief and childhood. Sophia has created a playful language of modernist abstraction which builds a holding space for markers of memory and association and a means to process feelings and thought patterns.
