About artist: Seán O’Neill is a painter and sculptor who currently lives in Dublin. His work is about the influence of mankind and technology on nature. Seeing as humans are a part of nature, the anthropogenic effect that advertising and communications technology and IT dependence is having our own psychological and emotional wellbeing is also something that needs to be looked at. Influenced by Pop Art, Francis Bacon, Picasso, Caravaggio, and Aborigine artists, Seán enjoys tackling the aesthetic as well as the thematic side of art. Seán works in mixed media, including found objects from his many travels. The variety of materials used conveys the ideas of diversity and freedom from convention that are essential to fulfilling and constructive self-expression.
About artwork: This mixed media work which includes some metallic and light reflective elements was done during the great snow of 2010. I was under slight time pressure as I was moving out of the bungalow I mainly used as a studio, which incidentally had no electricity or running water. While I was clearing out my stuff, I found some uncompleted paintings and just went for it. With the snow outside, it was brighter than usual in the kitchen/studio which made it more enjoyable and gave the painting added vibrancy. I often paint over and alter what I’m working on trying to get a painting to look the way I want it to but this one was completed in two or three sessions- an easy birth. Included are some found objects from a trip to my mother’s home town in Donegal. There’s an ad for a 1950’s dictaphone which ties in with what are now my central concerns of consumer culture and technology. It’s actually a key painting as it marks the point when communications technology became a dominant theme. The snow outside had an influence, but this is mainly an introspective piece, albeit one that sprang from quite a bit of gallivanting.
