Description
About artist: Niamh Flanagan is an artist and Master Printer, based in Graphic Studio Dublin where she also works as Programme Coordinator. She makes etchings, monoprints and collage works which explore themes of escape, loneliness and the search for utopias and space in our ever-connected worlds. Language, identity and belonging are researched through her practice, as well as our need for community and connection. She is interested in printmaking's myriad possibilities, both conceptual and technical, through the exploration of the matrix – which is something she investigates through her one-off collage pieces in particular. Her work is in the collections of the National Gallery of Ireland, the Office of Public Works, the British Library, and private collections nationally and internationally.
About artwork: I make etchings, monoprints and mixed media collages, based on ideas of escape, reverie and our search for places of retreat in the world. I am interested in the mountains, the pathways, the dark lakes, the clustering shelters, the groupings of islands, the fading horizons, faraway fields, and the clouds that hover above us. I am interested in the meaning we assign to all of these things. The houses that feature in my landscapes act as a representation of safety or security against the elements outside. But our notions of safety are temporary, and our time is fleeting. These structures might not hold, as storms and changes approach.
